Arabic 2 lower: module 2

What is the course about?

The course aims to equip you with the skills to converse in everyday situations using Arabic and to communicate in writing in a variety of situations. Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken form close to it are used in the class. Reference will be made to the major colloquial varieties, when relevant.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Based on Mastering Arabic 1, chapters (16-18) and the tutor's own material, the course has a strong emphasis on communication skills using mainly Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken variety close to it.

Times and days of the week, daily routine, describe your day, transport, renting a car, compare your life in the past and present and describe people and things.

Word order, singular and plural verbs, verbs in the present, negating the verb, asking questions, comparative and superlative, attached pronoun with ( lakn) and weak verbs.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Tell the time and the days of the week
-Talk about your daily routine.
- Describe your day and life in the past and present tense.
- Compare things, people and transport.
- Converse about culture e.g common greetings, Arabic proverbs and Arabic city (Cairo)
- Use past and present verb and negate the verb.
- Write simple texts, e.g. advertisements, description of events/places/people.
- Ask questions in a formal/informal way.
- Develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course offers progression from Arabic 2 lower: module 1. Students should have studied Arabic for more than a
year.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Course textbook: Mastering Arabic 1 3rd edition. Additional materials will be provided by the tutor.
