What is the course about?

This course aims to improve your intermediate level competence in all skills so that you can communicate
more effectively and confidently with Arabic speakers.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Traveling and visiting Arab cities in the Middle east; Nablus in Palestine, Beirut in Lebanon, Damascus in Syria. Talk about different Arabic dialects.

Grammar: Negate the past verb by using “lam” with hollow verbs, forms of the verb, case ending and passive.

- Ask for information and speak about dates, traditional, foods and travel
- Ask questions in a formal/informal way
- Learn more about how to speak and recognise different accent
- Write and read long texts and description.
- Improve your speaking through using the grammar structures correctly.
- Develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Arabic 3 upper: module 1, or studied Arabic for approximately 4 years recently or have developed an equivalent competence in the language.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc). It would also be useful if you had some knowledge of intermediate grammar terminology.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Throughout this term we will cover chapters 17-19 in Arabiyyat Al - Naas book 1.
