What is the course about?
Although mindfulness meditation was originally a Buddhist practice, it can be utilized by any interested person as a way to cultivate greater moment-by-moment attention in daily life. To practice the art of mindfulness means to come to rest in the present moment, with whatever is there. During this day-long course you will explore a variety of ways to develop your practice including mindfulness in your thoughts, feelings and even your body.
What will we cover?
A variety of meditation practices will be taught during the course including basic sitting practices from the Buddhist tradition and the four pillars of mindfulness. The course will be also concerned with specific applications of mindfulness - walking, listening, eating etc. Although the day will include some theory, it will be mainly practical and we will explore walking meditation and some gentle physical exercises to experience awareness of the body.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Recognize the principles of mindfulness, how it works and how to make it work for you.
- Use different opportunities to apply mindfulness in daily life.
- List the four pillars of mindfulness.
- Begin a meditation practice (or use mindfulness to deepen your practice if you are already meditating).
- Experience a greater awareness of the body during movement.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for both beginners and for those who have some experience in meditation. You are required to follow verbal instructions and extract information from hand-outs.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through tutor-led practices, meditations, exercises, group discussion, hand-outs and practical demonstrations.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No other costs. Do wear loose comfortable clothing. Bring an open mind!

Bram Williams has been a yoga teacher at the City Lit for 10+ years. He holds a British Wheel of Yoga Teaching Diploma. His own daily yoga practice has evolved over the years into a subtle, meditative approach to asana (yoga posture) with a large emphasis on pranayama (breath control) as a lead into seated meditation. Studying in mindfulness, and both Shamatha and Vipassana meditation in Northern India means he is very fortunate to have contact with his teacher there, as well as studying with teachers from the Himalayan Institute in America. Having trained in many styles and forms of yoga over more than 18 years, Bram’s teaching approach is flexible and adaptable to the needs of a particular group (or individual). he emphasis of his teaching vocabulary stresses breath release, so awareness is directed to the 'sensation' of the posture, rather than on a body aesthetic or idealised end result. A Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, a Yoga Elder with the Independent Yoga Network as well as Diploma Course Tutor with the British Wheel of Yoga, Bram is also a qualified Lip Reading Tutor.
