Between the Lines

"Our words, our words, and all our voices sound..."
—Amanda Bruckshaw, "Babel", Between the Lines 2018

We are now accepting submissions for 'Between the Lines 2019'!

All of our students on courses from May 2018 - May 2019 are encouraged to submit their work to Between the Lines 2019. The anthology will showcase the work of writers across the entire range of our writing courses, from introductory courses such as Ways into Creative Writing right up to advanced courses in poetry, fiction, drama and life writing.

Submissions should be emailed as attachments to betweenthelines@citylit.ac.uk by midnight on Monday 27 May 2019.

To celebrate the City Lit centenary, the 2019 edition of Between the Lines will be themed around the passage of time. Whether your work is nostalgic, futuristic or somewhere in between, we would love to read your writing on the following themes:

  • The passage of time.
  • Work that centres on, or features, the number 100.
  • Centenaries.

Although we have set a theme for this year’s anthology, you can be as creative with these prompts and themes as you wish.

Submission guidelines

  • Poems must be 40 lines or fewer.
  • Prose must be 1000 words or fewer.
  • Scripts must not exceed 2 A4 pages in length.
  • Extracts from longer works are welcome.
  • There is a maximum of two submissions per student.
  • Wherever possible please submit your work as a Microsoft word document.
  • In your submission document please include your name, state the form of your writing (e.g. poetry, prose, script), the title of the piece(s) submitted, course attended, name of tutor, and your student reference number (if available).
  • Printed copies of submissions can be left for the attention of the Writing Department at the City Lit Reception Desk on the Ground Floor; or posted to the Writing Department, City Lit, 1-10 Keeley Street, London, WC2B 4BA. Your work should be clearly marked as a submission for Between the Lines 2019 and include all of the above details.

The decision of the editorial team is final. The editors cannot enter into correspondence about their editorial decisions and are unable to provide feedback on those entries not accepted for publication. Copyright remains with the author. City Lit reserves the right to publish in its Between the Lines 2019 anthology and to use accepted pieces for promotional purposes online and in print.

Writers will be notified in summer 2019. All entrants will also be emailed an invitation to the launch of Between the Lines 2019 in September.
