Sabrina has always had an interest in art, but like many, she faced the challenge of pursuing her passion alongside a demanding full-time job. In 2017, after relocating from Australia and Portugal to London, Sabrina discovered City Lit and enrolled in the Fine Art Course. This decision marked the beginning of a transformative journey.

Finding the right path

Sabrina's artistic journey began with some small personal artistic projects in Portugal and a drawing course in Australia at the National Art School, which sparked her desire to explore art more deeply. After finishing her degrees, entering the job market and moving to London , she felt an increasing need to channel her creativity. She started by attending some evening short courses in painting and drawing at UAL, but she soon felt she needed a longer course that allowed her to develop further. That is how she found the City Lit Fine Art Course, which provided her with the structure and flexibility she needed to balance her artistic pursuits with her full-time job.

Benefits of the course

One of the standout aspects of the City Lit Fine Art Course was its flexibility, offering classes on Saturdays and evenings—perfect for someone with a busy schedule. Beyond convenience, the course offered numerous benefits:

  • Building Confidence: The course helped Sabrina gain confidence in her artistic abilities, encouraging her to explore and articulate her ideas.
  • Expert Guidance: The tutors at City Lit were exceptional, offering intuitive support, inspiration and guidance that helped Sabrina and her peers refine their artistic vision.
  • Diverse Perspectives: With different tutors throughout the year, students had the opportunity to revisit and refine their creative processes, continually building their confidence and skills.
  • Professional Growth: The course also prepared Sabrina for the professional art world, from setting up exhibitions to joining an art collective called nomer. This collective, formed with fellow City Lit students, recently returned from a 10-day residency in Greece.

Personal and Professional Impact

The City Lit Fine Art Course did more than enhance Sabrina's artistic skills; it enriched her personal and professional life. Working as an educator and researcher at a higher education institution, Sabrina found the course's flexibility crucial. It allowed her to pursue her passion for art without compromising her professional responsibilities.

Moreover, the course fostered a sense of community. Sabrina connected with people at similar stages in their artistic journeys, all eager to express their creativity and share their work. This network of like-minded individuals provided invaluable support and inspiration.

What I enjoy most about studying at City Lit are the relationships I have built, they really are, for lack of a better phrase, priceless. Not just with the tutors but with the colleagues as well. Throughout the years, I have done so many courses, I have met so many people, and still have solid relationships with those people.
