Learning Korean from a book alone would probably take you a long time to master the language. But paired with structured tutor-led Korean language courses like the coures we offer here at City Lit, a few well-chosen Korean learning books can help you on your journey. So whether you want to enjoy K-dramas without subtitles or you're planning to visit Korea soon, whatever your reasons for learning Korean, make sure you have the right books..

Korean Books Series for Beginners

For beginners, I recommend these three well-established book series. These engaging books will take you from your first “안녕하세요” (Annyeonghaseyo) to expressing your thoughts fluently.

  • Integrated Korean Series: This series is your no-nonsense but supportive tutor: structured, reliable, and thoroughly vetted by Korean language pros. It's widely used in universities worldwide and gives you just the right mix of vocabulary, grammar, and practice. Think of it as your main questline, complete with side quests (aka workbooks and audio resources).
  • Talk To Me In Korean (TTMIK): Friendly, approachable, and packed with charm. TTMIK’s books feel like you're learning with a chatty Korean friend who’s excited to teach you idioms, snack names, and quirky grammar points. Plus, their podcasts and YouTube videos are top-notch companions.
  • Korean From Zero! Series: This one gently ushers you into the language. Created by George Trombley, a fellow learner, it offers a slow-paced, comforting intro to Hangul, grammar, and basic vocabulary. It’s perfect for true beginners who want a gentle first step into Korean.

Korean Grammar Books

Korean grammar is notoriously difficult to master. These books are invaluable for building your grammar.

  • 500 Basic Korean Verbs (by Kyubyong Park) - Packed with clear conjugation charts and example sentences; these useful books will help you perfect your grammar. They're also quick to reference which is incredibly useful.
  • Korean Grammar in Use (by Jean-myung Ahn et al.) - If you've ever stared at a sentence and wondered, “Why is that particle being weird?” this book swoops in like a grammar superhero with clear explanations and practical examples. The series includes Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced editions and comes with MP3 audio recordings.

Hangul & Reading Practice Books

Hangul might look like a futuristic puzzle, but once you get the hang of it, it’s brilliantly logical. These books make reading Korean feel like unlocking a new skill.

  • The Korean Alphabet: Learn to Read Korean in 60 Minutes by 90 Day Korea: Speedy, smart, and surprisingly effective. This guide demystifies Hangul in record time.
  • Reading Korean for Beginners: Graded readers and short stories with repetition and manageable vocab—perfect for building your confidence as a reader.
