City Lit bookbinding partner of the Rebecca Swift Foundation

In 2017, Contemporary Crafts at City Lit was approached by the Rebecca Swift Foundationwith the suggestion to provide creative opportunities for the three winners of the inaugural Women Poets’ Prize which is sponsored by the foundation.

The foundation, which is a UK registered charity, was set up in memory of Rebecca Swift, founder and director of The Literary Consultancy, TLC, which aims to bridge the gap between writers, agents and publishers. In addition to being a prolific writer, editor and poet, Rebecca was an active supporter of mental health and women’s rights and ‘the biennial Women Poets’ Prize  seeks to honour Rebecca’s two key passions: poetry and the empowerment of women’.

We decided to offer the winners places on one  City Lit bookbinding class of their choice. Bookbinding, apart from being part of a long literary collaboration, provides an alternative environment for the development of the poets’ creative work and in line with Rebecca Swift’s desire to shift the emphasis away from ‘outcomes’ that focussed on publication, and instead to maximise vital creative space.

This year we are pleased to announce that places have been taken up on Bookbinding: learn to bind artists’ books (starts in April 2019). This course is not only an introduction to artist’s books for beginners, who can learn how to construct a range of books and develop their own creative content, it is also a workshop where more experienced or returning students come with ideas for projects they want to produce which makes it an exciting and vibrant space for learning.

Congratulations to the winners of this year’s prize:

Claire Collison, Nina Mingya Powles and Anita Pati.
