Every year, City Lit’s ‘Foundation Diploma in Art and Design’ students get a chance to showcase their creativity and innovative ideas in an end-of-term exhibition. 2024 is no exception.
This year, students are heading to ‘Downstairs at the Department Store’ in Brixton for their show ‘Foundations’, which kicks off on Wednesday 19th June.

What can visitors expect?
‘Foundations’ is a diverse exhibition featuring printing, textiles, sculptures, animation, fine art moving image, design projects and more.

What time can visitors come to the exhibition?
From Wednesday 19th June to Friday 21st June, the exhibition will be available to visit from 10.30am – 5pm.
On the opening day there will also be a private viewing from 6pm – 9pm.
For the final day on Saturday 22nd June, the gallery is open from 10.30am – 3pm.
“Creativity takes courage”
For Foundation Diploma students, the end-of-year exhibition is the culmination of a year of hard work put in during their time with City Lit. It is as much a celebration of their achievements, as it is a chance to showcase their work.
“We have drawn on inspiration from what has been taught on the course and our own lived experiences,” Hannah, one of the Foundation students, said, “it’s a unique offering only adult learning can share.”
When reflecting on the course, another student Debbie said, “Foundation Art & Design has been a joy – creativity takes courage and I’m so glad I took the leap.”

For Nina, who also took the Foundation Diploma, the course tutors were very open-minded.
“I have enjoyed the freedom to take risks and make the kind of work that I want to make,” she said.
“I will be showing a short film within an installation, inspired by a found archive that belonged to a 1960’s ice skater. I like to work in a multidisciplinary way, so my work involves moving image, sound, performance and photography.”
Participating students:
Aminat Abayomi, Jane Casey, Nina Dellow, Patrick DigueSo, Crispin Heaton, Leah Jones, Amaryllis Lazaridou, Polly Livingston, Andrea Marsh, Sharon Miller, Sally Mohamed, Debbie Odonovan, Sabina Pieroni, Dermot Dolan, Rachel Suddaby, Hannah Williams, Laura Wilson
Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at City Lit
The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is one of our most varied courses at City Lit.
Our students learn a wide range of creative disciplines during their practice. This includes ceramics, film, contemporary fine art, textiles, print, visual communication, and sculpture. This allows our students to make an informed decision as to which direction they want to specialise in.
Many students do the Pre-Foundation course first. This course is designed to give you the best possible introduction to Art and Design. It teaches you the basic skills and builds up your body of work before doing the full Foundation course.
The Foundation Diploma has great employment and further education outcomes. The skills you gain and portfolio you develop allows you to take an undergraduate degree course at a university, set up as a practitioner, or to prepare you for work in the creative industries.
One of our former students Esme recently sat down with us to talk about the course. After City Lit, she was accepted to study Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.
Many students also sit the Pre-Foundation course first. This course is designed to give you the best possible introduction to Art and Design. It teaches you the basic skills and builds up your body of work before sitting the full Foundation course.
