City Lit musical theatre teacher Dale Branston in Disney's Beauty and the Beast

The new live action version of Beauty & the Beast has proved a smash hit at the box office in recent weeks. City Lit students may spot our musical theatre teacher Dale Branston playing a supporting role in the film.

Dale stars as the Baker in the Disney production and talks through how he landed the role below:

“The audition process began back in January 2015 when my Agent submitted me for the casting of the 'Ensemble' for the new Disney Live Action 'Beauty And The Beast' musical feature film. Initially we were asked in for a 'movement' call which consisted of learning choreography and then using improvisational skills and character choices of our own to build on what we had been taught.

“These auditions and recalls went on for another 4 weeks, and included a singing call where we were asked to learn songs from the musical to sing for the Disney music supervisors and more in depth characterisation and improv movement for the movie's Director - Bill Condon.

“There was another another two week wait until I finally found out that I had been offered the role of the 'Baker' in the featured Ensemble, a character that is mentioned in the song 'Belle' and then singing and dancing in all of the Ensemble musical numbers throughout the movie. Rehearsals began in March 2015 and filming wrapped in July 2015.”

A remake of the 1991 animated classic, the film stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame as the titular beast in the classic fairytale.

City Lit run a number of musical theatre courses throughout the year.

Beauty & the Beast remains on general release nationwide.
