A Hitchcock-Inspired Reimagining of Shakespeare’s Classic

This December, the City Lit Theatre Company invites audiences to experience Hamlet as they’ve never seen it before. Directed by James Jarrett, this production transforms Elsinore into a dystopian wasteland – a world steeped in secrets, lies, and suspense. Inspired by the cinematic style of Alfred Hitchcock, the play promises an atmosphere of tension and intrigue that will keep audiences on edge from beginning to end.

Spotlight on Hamlet: Rebeca Barbosa

Rebeca Barbosa
City Lit has been a place very close to my heart since I’ve decided to make acting my profession. I have partaken in the following courses: scratch night, screen acting, Stanislavski beginners. These led me to study the Level 3 Acting Diploma, which I could not speak highly enough about – the level of education I received on that course was incredible.

Taking on the title role is Rebeca Barbosa, whose portrayal of Hamlet promises to be both powerful and deeply introspective.

On playing Hamlet she shares: ''I find playing Hamlet interesting as he allows me to explore the inner turmoils of grief, madness and vengeance; whilst uncovering the connection between trauma and insanity. The director, James Jarrett, has been a joy to work with and allows us to home in on our skills and explore our creativity.''

Spotlight on Ophelia: Zainab Hayat

Zainab Hayat
The production of Hamlet is edgy, cutting and experimental – everything which a good tragedy should be. The production includes a stellar cast and a beautiful emphasis on direction through movement.
Zainab Hayat

Among the talented cast is City Lit drama student Zainab Hayat, who takes on the iconic role of Ophelia. With a background in acting and screen courses, Zainab brings both experience and passion to the stage.

Reflecting on her role, she shares: “Playing Ophelia is a life-long dream finally realised, and her story is beautiful in all its elements of fragility, love, courage and pain. No matter what her end, she is a heroine through and through.”
