City Lit welcomed Gillian Keegan MP, Minister for Skills & Apprenticeships, for a virtual tour of the College. Hosted on Thursday 25 June, the online meeting was joined by Dame Moira Gibb, Chair of City Lit Governing Body; Mark Malcomson, Principal at City Lit; and Phil Chamberlain, Executive Director External Engagement; as well as numerous representatives across the College.
City Lit’s transition to online learning was high on the agenda as well as our ongoing response to the coronavirus and the challenges we are currently facing. During her virtual tour, the Minister spent time with numerous members of staff, tutors and students from different departments across the College including Community Outreach and our Percussion Orchestra. We also discussed the importance of our Student Bursary and introduced the Minister to our lipreading campaign #HearMyLips.
City Lit Principal Mark Malcomson CBE said: “We were delighted to have Minister Gillian Keegan visit City Lit "virtually." It was great that the Minister had the opportunity to meet some of our tutors and students and see the breadth of curriculum and community that we provide at City Lit. Our tutors are some of the best in the world, experts in their subjects and superb at teaching adults. The range of what we do was on show for the Minister and she exceptionally engaged in each area we showcased. Students told the Minister how City Lit has given them a sense of community, enhanced their wellbeing and improved their skills. City Lit has faced huge challenges during the pandemic and our team has excelled in re-orientating the whole college. It was heartening that the Minister understood the challenges we face and was exceptionally supportive.”
Gillian Keegan MP, Minster for Skills & Apprenticeships said: “I was so impressed by the passion and commitment shown by all of the staff, tutors and students who I met at City Lit today. This pandemic has presented so many challenges across society, and for City Lit to ensure learning continues online which I know can be challenging for some courses.
“I heard today the impact that high quality adult education has on people’s lives – students with learning disabilities who otherwise would be isolated or lonely are able to connect through music; other learners can continue their creative passions; as well as those who are developing skills that will enhance their future employment opportunities. Post Covid-19, as we return to our new normal, places like City Lit will be essential for the recovery of London and communities across the country.”
