Art has the unique power to transcend boundaries and evoke emotions, making it a universal language that connects us all.
This week, we had the privilege of hosting a captivating event as part of the 2023 Art History Festival, a celebration that aimed to break down barriers, promote art appreciation, and shine a light on the significance of art history in our lives.
Art History Festival
In an era where arts education, including art history, has been facing growing challenges, this festival arrived as a beacon of hope. It sought to demystify the world of art history, making it accessible to all, regardless of their background or previous exposure to the arts. This mission is particularly vital given recent research findings highlighting the unequal access to museums among school pupils, often determined by factors like location and socio-economic background.
The World According to Colour
The festival's highlight was a captivating session led by James Fox, a renowned art historian and the author of "The World According to Colour: A Cultural History." You may also recognise him as the writer and presenter of the BBC series "A History of Art in Three Colours." James Fox's engaging style and profound knowledge made for an evening that was both enlightening and entertaining.
The anticipation for James Fox's session was palpable, and it did not disappoint. The event was fully booked, emphasising the love for art in our community. Attendees from diverse backgrounds gathered at City Lit, eager to delve into the world of colour and its impact on art and culture.
James Fox led a thought-provoking discussion about his book, "The World According to Colour." He took the audience on a journey through history, exploring the profound significance of colour in human culture and art.
The evening also included a captivating exploration of the world of renowned artist Andrew Marr. Attendees had the privilege of seeing some of Marr's paintings and gained insight into his unique use of colour and the sources of his inspiration. This segment of the event not only celebrated the power of colour in art but also highlighted the work of a contemporary artist who continues to push the boundaries of creativity.
Following the enlightening conversation, James Fox hosted a book signing in the City Lit Gallery, where attendees had the opportunity to meet the author and secure a personal copy of "The World According to Colour”.

At City Lit, we are committed to making art history accessible and enjoyable for all. The 2023 Art History Festival succeeded in creating a space where the magic of art and the significance of its history could be celebrated, appreciated, and shared.
