The Christmas holidays are a great time to get stuck into a good book.
City Lit tutor Patricia Sweeney shared three of her favourite reads to enjoy this Christmas, that were discussed in her literature groups.
There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book over the Christmas break. If you’re looking for inspiration, here are three captivating novels that have sparked lively discussion in our City Lit reading group. Each one offers something special for the season.
Brian by Jeremy Cooper
If you love films as much as books, this is a perfect choice. Brian follows a solitary man who finds meaning and connection through cinema. Frequenting the British Film Institute, he meets others who share his passion for film, and through these encounters, his life begins to change. It’s a thoughtful, beautifully written novel about art, friendship and belonging.
Absolutely and Forever by Rose Tremain
Rose Tremain’s sixteenth novel is a sensitive, witty coming-of-age story set in England during the 1950s and 60s. It explores love, friendship and the choices that shape who we become. Tremain’s writing is warm and insightful, making this an uplifting read for the holidays.
The Girls of Slender Means by Muriel Spark
First published in 1963, this classic remains as fresh and enjoyable as ever. Set in a London hostel for young women in 1945, the story captures their attempts to live as if the war had never happened. Beneath the surface gaiety lie secrets, ambition and unexpected joy. Spark’s sharp wit and elegant prose make this a timeless treat.
