Have you always dreamed of becoming a performer? City Lit’s wide range of online and in-person courses can ignite your passions and turn childhood dreams into reality.

Meet Chaachi Deane

When she was young, all Chaachi wanted to do was perform. Spurred on by her dream, she booked a singing class at City Lit, which gave her the training and confidence she needed to start auditioning for roles. She has since featured in plays, concerts, cabarets, and pantomimes.

Have you always wanted to become a performer?

I have always wanted to become a performer from a very young age. When I was young, I’d always asked people, “Shall I sing my song for you?” or “Shall I show you my dance?”

School provided me with opportunities, but I was unsure how to create my own chances. I tried a few things but that didn’t pan out. The disappointment was crushing.  Even when friends and family asked, “Are you still singing?” I’d reply, “No.” Yet deep down, the call persisted.

I remember browsing on the City Lit website looking at all the different courses. Fear held me back until one day, I decided: “I’m just going to do it!” With newfound courage, I enrolled in the Sing Broadway course. Stepping into that classroom, I felt a resounding “yes”— this is my path. Since then, I’ve immersed myself in several courses, and my journey has been truly transformative.

Tell us a bit more about the course you are currently doing

I am currently enrolled in a Sing Musical Theatre workshop. During our classes, we select songs and practice alongside an incredible accompanist playing a grand piano. Our tutor provides feedback and suggestions for improvement, which we then apply during our practice at home.

We have the freedom to choose our pieces, but the course also includes teacher’s selections. These songs broaden our repertoire and help us discover what suits our vocal range and character.

One of my favourite pieces was the teacher’s choice: “Your Daddy’s Son” from the musical “Ragtime.” Initially, I wouldn’t have dared to choose it myself because it's very challenging. Encouragement from others allowed me to sing it, and I performed this song during our end-of-term concert.

My love of performing, and particularly singing, stretches back as long as I can remember. In my childhood, and early adulthood, I was part of every school play and concert that would have me!

How has the City Lit courses helped you achieve your goals?

Having a weekly class provided a powerful boost. With a repertoire of songs, I gained the confidence to audition. Since then, my life has taken an incredible turn. Over the past two years, I have immersed myself in pantomimes, plays, concerts, and cabarets — each experience was very transformative.

Participating in the course pushed me to put myself out there. I scoured online platforms for auditions and landed roles as an actor in a play at The Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington. I also performed in the cabaret “Divas” at Phoenix Ops Club, belting out some unforgettable Aretha Franklin tunes. Having that sense of community really enables you to take those risks because there's someone to talk about it to afterwards.

My teacher also played a crucial role. Seeking advice and support was easy, and City Lit equipped me with essential skills to pursue my dream.

What do you enjoy most about the courses?

I have always had a passion for singing, but my technical training was limited. The Sing Broadway course changed that. It provided clear guidance on vocal techniques and helped me build my repertoire — things I previously had no idea how to do. The teachers are exceptional professionals.

What truly transformed my routine was the class itself. Knowing I’d perform in front of classmates motivated me to practice regularly. Now, singing every day feels natural. Additionally, the support network — having people to celebrate successes and navigate challenges with — gave me the strength to persevere. When you’re on this journey, giving up isn’t an option when you have a class to attend and fellow students cheering you on.

I've loved all of it. The grand piano and the accompanist can play anything, and it just incredible, I can't believe that it’s just here, and you can opt into this and it's not expensive. It feels incredible that I have access to that.

What are your current plans and projects?

Throughout my life, I have been fortunate — my family, my children — they have all contributed to my happiness. Yet, there was a part of me that felt a little empty, yearning for more. Then, I discovered City Lit, a place where I could pursue my passion. It’s incredible — the feeling of being where you belong. I an very committed to my course, excited about each term.

Balancing a full-time job, parenting, and my performing endeavours isn’t easy. But I cherish every moment. While I dream of getting paid for my performances, for now, I’m content. Auditions keep me going — I’m currently trying out for the upcoming production of “The Colour Purple” by the Amateur Dramatic Society in November. Persistence is key; I won’t give up!
