How These City Lit Students Transformed Their Lives at Inspiring Multiply Awards

Over a third of adults say that doing maths makes them feel anxious. One in five are so fearful it even makes them feel physically sick.

Confidence around maths is a silent problem. It’s probably something that many of us don’t even consider. But understanding maths is an essential skill for helping us navigate our day-to-day lives.

Many people were able to learn maths at school, but others are not always offered the same level of support at school-age. Thankfully for us, maths is a skill like any other and can be learned at any point in life.

The Multiply Programme aimed to tackle anxieties adults had around maths.

The 'Multiply' Programme

At City Lit, we understand that these anxieties exist. Since 2022, we’ve worked closely with the Greater London Authority on their ‘Multiply’ programme. This teaches adults essential numeracy skills that allow them to feel more confident with numbers in the real world.

But it’s not an easy process. Contrary to what the Jackson 5 claimed in 1970, 123 is sometimes not as easy as ABC.

Many of our students had to overcome anxieties which have been affecting them for years. But with the help of City Lit’s expert tutors and supportive partners, this changed. Our students gained newfound confidence in their numeracy and progressed through exams to gain qualifications.

It’s a fantastic achievement and one we were keen to celebrate.

Remarkable Achievements

Head of Universal Skills Sobia Butt was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. "We are incredibly proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students who have successfully completed the Multiply courses at City Lit," she said. "Their dedication, hard work, and perseverance have truly paid off, and we couldn't be more thrilled with their progress."

She continued, "Congratulations to all our students for their outstanding accomplishments. Your success is our success, and we can't wait to see what you achieve next!"

The awards also sadly mark the end to the ‘Multiply’ scheme. Although the programme is no longer running, City Lit will continue to offer maths courses to help those who want to gain a better understanding of numbers.
