City Lit and Women

Throughout our history, City Lit has played a significant role in educating women in London. Empowerment through education, regardless of gender, has been at the centre of our activities throughout this time.

Since we opened our doors, thousands of women have benefitted from City Lit’s broad and flexible courses, managing study alongside work, and other responsibilities.

Inspiring alumni

We have many inspiring women amongst our alumni, including best-selling authors, Malorie Blackman and Anna Burns who both attended writing courses at City Lit.

Lucille Lewin, founder of high street fashion brand ‘Whistles’, also pursued her passion for ceramics by completing a City Lit Ceramics Diploma and then went on to study for her Masters at the Royal College of Art in 2017. She has exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery and her work is held in private collections internationally.

Celebrating the achievements of women

Throughout our broad programmes, our tutors take every opportunity to promote and celebrate the achievements of women across arts, culture, and social history.

We will continue to inspire, champion, celebrate, empower and support women from all across the country through learning to work towards greater balance – in education, the arts, culture, the workplace and society as a whole.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, not only on Tuesday 8th March but all through the coming months, we have a range of courses available which explore and celebrate the significant contributions made by women in life, society and culture…

Eight Women Print - New Exhibition

On Tuesday 8 March, we'll be launching a new exhibition in the City Lit Gallery celebrating the work of eight talented women who met during one of our year-long courses in advanced printmaking.

Guided by their wise and encouraging tutors David Holah, Sue Baker-Kenton, Adam Piper and Thomas Gosebrüch; they decided to leap to professional collaboration with diverse printmaking practices incorporating painting, textiles, video, sculpture, text, the spoken word, performance and book art. The journey started with months of mulling over decisions on names, logos, websites and workshops. At the end of it, Eight Women Print was born.

As eight strong women, professionals, homemakers, retired or active, of all ages, helping each other experiment and extend their work and sharing their creative journey with a wider audience - the power of the collective feminine is unmissable.

Eight Women Print runs from 8-26 March in the City Lit Gallery.

Address: 1-10 Keeley Street, WC2B 4BA, London.

International Women's Day 2022

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
