Language Support Sessions: Free extra support for Spanish, French and Italian beginners

Published: 19 February 2026

The first steps in language learning are certainly exciting, but sometimes they can also be overwhelming; especially when you’re balancing work, family life, social commitments, and everyday life. If you’ve never studied a language before, it’s natural to feel unsure. You might think:

  • There’s too much to take in at once.
  • The class moves too quickly.
  • I’m not confident enough to ask questions.
  • I’m the only one struggling.

All this can be disheartening. Not to worry, you’re not alone. Many learners feel this way at first. What matters is finding the right support so you can keep going and enjoy the process.

That’s why at City Lit we have introduced free Language Support Sessions for beginners in Spanish, French and Italian

What are Language Support Sessions?

Throughout your first year of learning Spanish, French or Italian at City Lit, you can sign up for free support sessions with a tutor.

These extra sessions are designed to give you more time to practise, build your confidence, and help you make steady progress.

In these sessions you’ll have the chance to revisit grammar points, pronunciation, vocabulary and tricky concepts in a relaxed, friendly setting. You can also ask questions you didn’t have time or confidence to raise in class.

Who can join a support session?

The support sessions are available to first year students on Spanish, French and Italian beginners’ module 1, module 2 and module 3 courses.

When do the support sessions run?

Support sessions run alongside your regular classes. Within two weeks of your course starting, you’ll receive an email inviting you to sign up for a support session and choose your preferred dates.

Can I suggest a focus for the support session?

You’re welcome to suggest topics you’d like to cover and you can still join even if you are happy to practise anything or are not sure what to focus on.

What do I need to bring for the session?

When it comes to your session, there’s nothing to prepare. Simply join via the Zoom link we’ll send before your chosen session.

What happens in a support session?

Each session is designed to help you make steady, confident progress. They are especially helpful if you’re returning to study after a break or feeling nervous about learning something new.

Sessions are held in English to remove any pressure and make explanations easy to follow.

In a one-hour slot, your tutor will:

  • Go over key points such as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structure.
  • Explain everything clearly in English, with examples you can use straight away.
  • Answer questions you didn’t have time or confidence to ask in class.

Why join?

Even one or two extra sessions can make a real difference. You will:

  • Build confidence in your language skills.
  • Get personalised support on areas you find challenging.
  • Practise in a welcoming environment with other learners.

If you have any questions, contact the Languages team at languages@citylit.ac.uk

These sessions make a real difference to beginner learners. Even one or two extra sessions can improve understanding and enjoyment of your chosen language, and you will feel the benefit in your learning experience.
