Meet the team: Sue Doggett
Introducing Sue Doggett who teaches Bookbinding and Book Arts and coordinates our Bookbinding and Calligraphy offer.
"My creative practice swings between bookbinding and book arts. My main focus is making designer bindings which involve a creative response to an existing text or creating my own content which I then bind into a book. I use a lot of hand and machine embroidery on my bindings as I love the ways in which thread can be used conceptually as well as a way of drawing and creating texture. For the content I create hand drawn and digital collages and my main interests are surface design, women’s history, sewing as drawing, the role of craft practice, memory and the history of magic. The book has always been something I am drawn to as it is usually a hand-held object which a reader can engage with in an intimate way. You can play around with narrative, pacing and sequencing and you can hide and reveal. There is also a technical element to the functionality of the book which adds another creative dimension to the making."

"The City Lit Bookbinding course is a brilliant way to start your bookbinding studies if you are interested in developing skills from a traditional base. It is ideal for beginners and refreshers as we start from the very basics and move through graded projects which are designed to introduce and consolidate skills and to encourage you to be independent makers. From this course you can progress in any direction, whether you are interested in traditional bookbinding, book arts or conservation and repair. It is a great place to start if you want a good grounding in technique, time to learn how to make and practice a range of book structures whilst also doing some creative work like making paste papers, doing simple marbling and exploring some simple decorative techniques such as embossing and tooling."
