#SewnAntidote

City Lit textiles tutor Lara Hailey teaches students on the City Lit Advanced Textiles Course who exhibited their show, In Transition, in the City Lit Gallery earlier this year. Here Lara invites the City Lit community to collaborate on a stitch project called #SewnAntidote...

SewnAntidote

My name is Lara Hailey, I’m a contemporary artist living in the UK, you can see my work @larahailey_ on Instagram. I am interested in documenting social history through collaborative stitch projects and how the therapeutic benefits of stitching with a shared aim can create wellbeing and connection in these times of isolation. I would like to invite you to make a small circular textile that reflects upon the current Covid-19 pandemic or your experience of being in isolation.

You could stitch something you’re thinking about, a message for someone, an inspirational quote or something reported in the media. You could be inspired by something in your home, your daily walk or appreciation for nature, something you miss during lockdown or something you’ve gained. Your piece can include text and have abstract or figurative imagery. I would recommend using appliqué (collage in fabric), hand or machine stitching and quilting techniques.

  • Diameter of circle: 15cm
  • 2 foundation circles (front and back) - medium weight woven cotton.
  • Use any combination of the following colours, reds, pinks, blues, turquoises, greys, black, white, cream and ivory for foundation circles, applique and stitching.
  • See full instructions for SewnAntidote here

When your textile is finished photograph it against a surface in your home (make sure you use a square format). Initially we can share our pieces on Instagram to make a virtual textile (tag @sewnantidote and use the hashtag #sewnantidote). If you’re happy to send me your piece, make sure I receive it by Monday 8 June I will be stitching them onto a base, bringing together our personal reflections to form a joint narrative of this strange time, once completed I hope to find somewhere to exhibit it in the future.

If you want to send me your finished piece, email me and I will forward my address.
The deadline is Monday 8 June.
You can view online stitch tutorials here.
