Want to Study Massage? City Lit Student Jason Shares His Journey

After experiencing stress at work, Jason did a massage workshop at City Lit — and found a whole new career. Here, he discusses the rewards of pursuing a new path…

Hi Jason, congratulations on completing your ITEC Level Three Massage Diploma at City Lit. Why did you decide to study here?

II was working as a travel agent and I loved helping people plan their trips. But I was also under a lot of stress and suffering from pain in my body, which inspired me to do a taster workshop in massage at City Lit.

How did that workshop set you on the path to a new career as a massage thereapist?

Well, I could see so much improvement in both my body and mental health. And I could see how massage could help other people too. So I decided that City Lit was the place where I wanted to grow. Since then, I have completed many courses at the Wellbeing Centre, including Complementary Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Facial Massage and Lymphatic Drainage.

What did you like about the college and your course?

I enjoyed both the teaching and the environment at City Lit. Covent Garden is an amazing area, you can see so many things. The tutors were so supportive and knowledgeable, and the staff were so helpful and friendly. My classmates were also amazing — I felt like I was part of a community of friendship and family. We are all still in touch with each other..

When people want to train for a new career, they often worry about the financial barriers. Is this something you experienced?

Without City Lit’s financial support, I wouldn't have finished all these courses. For instance, the team helped me find out which funding I could access, including City Lit bursaries. And when funding wasn’t available, I was able to pay in installments. I also received access to free vocational courses, which was so amazing. This helped me to take a lot of courses here, so I didn’t have to stop after just one. I'm grateful for that.

I felt like I was part of a community of friendship and family.

Now that you’ve completed your Diploma in Massage, what’s next for you?

My plan is to open my own clinic in the future. I want to help people improve their lives, their bodies, and their minds, and enjoy life more and more.

What difference has studying massage made to your life?

I gave myself permission to do what I love for my future life and work. This means I can help people instead of just letting life happen around me. It’s my time.
