What is the course about?

Looking at the ingredients of a cake we will explore the plants that are used, their botanic and commons names and their cultivation.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Plants used in the preparation of a cake, their botany and uses and our dependence on them.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

List the origins of the plant ingredients of a cake, the botanic and common names of the plants and an understanding of why plants as food matter.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

An interest in plants,food and cooking is all that is needed.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through tutor presentation and discussion.

Letta Jones

Letta Jones, MA, is a Lecturer in Horticulture and Garden History. She taught at Capel Manor College and and Birkbeck, University of London for 15 years. She now teaches classes at the City Lit, Marlborough College Summer School, Woodbrooke,Denman, Glenthorne and Knuston Hall. She is part of the Garden History Grapevine/Gardens Trust group which offers introductory and advanced courses in garden history www.gardenhistorygrapevine.wordpress.com. A guide at the Chelsea Physic Garden for 18 years, Letta now teaches on their education programme. She is a Green Flag Park judge and she also leads her own garden study tours abroad.
