What is the course about?
The course aims to enhance your understanding of the Latin language by translating selected satires by Horace.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will translate and analyse Satires 1.1 lines 1–12, 28–100; 1.3 lines 25–75; and 2.2 lines 1–30, 70–111 contained in Selections from Horace, Satires: An Edition for Intermediate Students (Bloomsbury, 2019). Please, prepare the translation of about 100 lines for the first class of the course.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read and translate Horace's Satires;
- have a greater appreciation of his style and use of the hexameters.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for upper intermediate/advanced students who have been studying Latin for several years or have studied Latin at secondary school or university.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work. Reading and translating original Latin poems, tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. Students are asked to prepare the the translation of about 100 lines before each class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You can either buy Selections from Horace, Satires: An Edition for Intermediate Students (Bloomsbury, 2019) or use any edition of Horace’s Satires (in particular: Satires 1.1 lines 1–12, 28–100; 1.3 lines 25–75; and 2.2 lines 1–30, 70–111).
