What is the course about?
This course will provide you with an overview of what to expect on the accredited course. You will cover and practice some of the topics on the GCSE syllabus, become more aware of the commitment of attending every week and the time, means and dedication required to work outside the classroom. You will also become familiar with our use of Google Classroom for communicating and submitting homework and assessments, as well as communication with fellow students and your tutor
(Please note the Friday classes are not every Friday, but approximately every third week).
What will we cover?
Some of these topics will be covered on this Introductory course
- Everyday applications of percentages and fractions
- Statistics: an examination of how and why they are used
- Geometry and properties of shapes
- Algebra (linear and quadratic)
- Introduction to Trigonometry.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
You should have learned how to carry out the skills above and be able to use these in real life situations such as
• Comparing interest rates and choosing the best savings account
• Interpreting statistics in the media and the visual representations of data around you. Be able to comment on these and draw conclusions from them
• Using algebra to convert a problem into letters and numbers to enable you to manipulate and solve it
• Developing your appreciation of the physical world through the study of geometry, shapes and trigonometry, and understanding the importance of these topics in for example architecture and art
You should also be able to
• identify the commitment needed to complete the Maths GCSE successfully
• identify the level of mathematical skill needed to succeed in Maths GCSE.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This introductory course is at level 2. You need to be working at that level and score well on an initial pre-course assessment before being accepted onto this course . You will also need to be able to show that you have the commitment to attend every week and to work outside the classroom as required to cover the work.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of maths. You will work on your own and with other students. You will learn in a step by step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually so you know how to improve. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You need to bring a lined A4 writing pad, pen and a folder for assignments/handouts. You will need to buy a textbook and an appropriate calculator. Your tutor will give you details of these in the first class. Some basic maths equipment will be needed e.g. a ruler, a protractor, compasses and pencils. Access to a computer is required as Google Classroom will be used on the course.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
After successfully completing the introductory course you can enrol on the full GCSE Foundation maths course. If not ready for this you may be offered a place on our Get Ready for GCSE which will help you to succeed in getting onto the full GCSE the following year
