What is the course about?
Learn exciting and innovative ways to create characters and tell stories. Develop skills in the techniques of model, cut out and drawn animation to elicit a range of feelings and emotions and to create short narrative sequences exported for cross platform delivery. You will learn how to capture animation using a DSLR camera and the professional application Dragon Frame and edit your film using different effects and processes to creatively combine clips in Adobe Premiere Pro CC. This course is invaluable for artists, illustrators, animators and film makers looking to enhance their practice.
What will we cover?
- The aesthetics and conceptual framework of narrative animation.
- The work of internationally renowned narrative animators working with drawn, cut out and model animation
- Narrative stop motion animation using an innovative approach to drawn, cut out and model animation.
- Setting up and capturing animation using Dragon Frame and a DSLR camera
- Creative editing and compositing using Premiere Pro CC
- Exporting sequences using the appropriate codecs for a range of delivery options including social media.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use a DSLR camera with Dragon Frame to capture stop motion
- Creatively edit your clips using Adobe Premiere Pro CC
- Export your sequence using an appropriate format and codec.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for beginners but has much to offer animators or film makers who wish to enhance and develop their practice. You are expected to have basic experience in using a computer including navigating files, opening applications and opening and saving files.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course in our fully equipped studios. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can develop your practice further by gaining guided help on your own personal project in the course Stop Motion Animation: Personal project. You can also develop your experimental moving image work through City Lit courses in Experimental Film Making, Editing, After Effects CC and Animate. You can develop your drawing and model making skills further through courses in illustration, children’s book illustration, cartooning, experimental drawing and painting.
Stephanie Griffiths is a BAFTA award winning animator with over 20 years professional experience working on numerous well known children’s animated programmes. As well as a string of credits in broadcast model and drawn animation, Stephanie has produced experimental films creatively combining animation and live action. She is also an accomplished puppet maker and puppeteer. Teaching and mentoring has been an integral part of Stephanie’s practice and she has facilitated and mentored a wide range of innovative animation and art projects working with different communities and international artists.
