    Dickens adapted words from Shakespeare to describe his periodical All the Year Round – and by implication his central purpose as a writer of novels. By close analysis of key scenes from three major works, we shall illuminate precisely how Dickens presents the crucial life choices that we make and the often unforeseeable – but sustained – impact that these have on ourselves and on others.

    The course covers poetry, prose and drama. There will be a selection of poetry from the 19th and 20th centuries. Poets include Robert Browning, Emily Bronte, Gillian Clarke and Simon Armitage. For the prose, you will read and discuss Don’t Look Now by Daphne du Maurier and Up the Junction by Nell Dunn (screen adaptations of these will also be discussed). You will read, discuss and view two plays: Lady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde and Comedians by Trevor Griffiths, in terms of theme, character and language, and how they work as performance texts.
