Rare opportunity to learn about the ancient firing technique of an Anagama Kiln.
The course is about experimenting with saggar firings at City Lit ceramics studio, then culminating with firing the wood fired Anagama Kiln at Oxford University over 5 days, packing on Wednesday 5th July, firing from Thursday 6th July finishing Sunday 9th July and unpacking the kiln on Saturday 15th July,this part of the course is off site at the Anagama kiln Oxford. The course will involve making specific clay bodies, wood ash glazes and shino glazes.
Learners should have some experience working in clay.

What is the course about?

The course is about experimenting with Saggar firings using different materials at City Lit, which will involve making clay bodies and specific glazes for the Anagama kiln. Leaning about the Anagama kiln and packing and firing it off site at Oxford University Kiln site. Working in shifts to successfully fire the Anagama Kiln.

Firing an outside kiln with a group
Clay bodies
Wood ash glazes
effects of wood fired ceramics
Experimenting using saggars(ceramic boxes).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

make different glazes for stoneware temperatures
make different clay bodies
help fire a Anagama kiln
use a saggar.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Learners should have some experience working in clay.
Intermediate & advanced

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and
safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and
be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, both group and individual.

You will need to be able to travel to Oxford University Kiln site over the 5th july to 9th July, or find accomodation in the area.
There is a charge of £2.50 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £20:00 per bag/ £10:00 per half bag.
