Seven calm and productive Sundays of working with clay in the ceramics studio. An ideal course for those who are new to clay or wishing to develop their clay making skills with studio time and tutor support. Basic hand building, throwing, surface decoration and glazing will be taught.
What will we cover?
We will cover: - The core hand-building techniques: pinching, coiling, slab-building - The process of decorating and glazing - How to make simple wheel thrown forms on the potter’s wheel
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Make a piece of work using pinching and/or coiling and/ or slab building techniques - Apply surface decoration and glazes to work - Understand the principles of working on the potter’s wheel - Practice the steps to centring clay on the wheel and making a cylinder (beginners) and progress to more advanced forms as your skill levels increase.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for both beginners and those that have some previous experience or working with clay. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be group demonstrations and 1:1 feedback and support from the tutor throughout this course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee. There is a charge of £3.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24.00 per bag/ £12.00 per half bag. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. In the final week you will need to pay for materials that you have used during the course, payments to be made by contactless card reader.
Important Safety Notice - Pacemakers: The motor on the potter’s wheels may pose a serious risk to individuals with pacemakers and/or internal defibrillators . For your safety, if you have a pacemaker and/or an internal defibrillator you cannot work in the Ceramics studio if the wheels are in use.
