What is the course about?

Learn the basics of Chinese (Mandarin) and apply them to objects and inscriptions held at the British Museum using online resources.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The foundations of Chinese (Mandarin). Details of the content and of the objects will be provided at the start of the course by the tutor.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Use numbers to tell the time, days of the week and time periods
-Exchange greetings
-Give and request personal information (name, number, email)
-Talk about countries and nationalities
-Places to go and things to do in China
-Basic knowledge of Chinese phonetics: Pinyin and tones
-Basic knowledge of Chinese characters, words and sentences
-Chinese character writing
-Discussions of various cultural topics inspired by the objects at the British Museum, e.g. Chinese dynasty, Chinese names, silk road, festivals in China, etc.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you are a complete beginner.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Classroom activities will follow the traditional approach but will aim at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work using Zoom. Students are expected to participate in the activities and to do homework every week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Resources and handouts will be provided by the tutor through Google classroom.
