Dr Janina Ramirez is a presenter, lecturer, and researcher specialising in historical art. She holds degrees from Oxford and York, where she completed her MA and PhD. Janina has taught at York, Warwick, and Winchester Universities and is now the Course Director for the Undergraduate Certificate in History of Art at Oxford. She also lectures at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her work spans medieval art and literature, and she has presented several BBC4 documentaries, including ‘Saints & Sinners’ and ‘Chivalry & Betrayal.’ Janina is the author of adult and children's books. Her latest book, Femina, published in 2022, became a Sunday Times Bestseller and was longlisted for the Cundill History Prize.

2025 Fellowship Event
In 2025, City Lit hosted a special evening celebrating Dr Janina Ramirez as she received the prestigious City Lit Lifetime Fellowship. In conversation with City Lit Principal Mark Malcomson CBE, Dr Ramirez reflected on her remarkable career as an art historian, broadcaster and bestselling author, sharing insights into her acclaimed book Femina and her forthcoming release Legenda. The event offered a fascinating look at her passion for uncovering hidden histories, particularly the stories of women written out of the Middle Ages, and marked a memorable moment in honouring her contribution to public learning and cultural understanding.
