What is the course about?

The course aims at furthering students’ knowledge of grammatical structures and vocabulary so that they can continue reading adapted and simple unadapted prose in Classical Greek.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We shall examine the first and second aorist optative and relative pronouns. We shall be using the textbook Reading Greek, a textbook designed for adult students based on original Greek sources. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We will start at around Section 10.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate some knowledge of a-thematic verbs
- show familiarity with indirect speech
- recognise the optatives of irregular verbs
- have some insight into the world of ancient Greece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have attended Classical Greek 3 module 2, or have an equivalent knowledge (approximately 2 years of studies). As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 1-2 hours per week.

Judith Rice

Judith has been teaching Classics (and other subjects) to both adults and children for over 10 years, and before that worked as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language, as a journalist, and in charities. She has taught at the Open University, Royal Holloway, and Birkbeck and is currently Head of Classics at a school in North London, and finds the similarities and difference sbetween adult and school education both challenging and fascinating. Having returned to formal education as a mature student herself, to pursue postgraduate work in Greek cultural and intellectual history, she has a strong commitment to continuing education. She has degrees from Oxford University and Royal Holloway, University of London and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Judith's love of ancient language, literature, philosophy, and archaeology arises from an overridng interest in ideas, and in the ways that we can learn about how people have thought in different times and places.
