What is the course about?
The course aims to enable students to read straightforward Classical Greek prose by gaining knowledge of the basic grammatical structures.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We shall be using material provided by the tutor (taken from Reading Greek, CUP; you do not need to buy the book). Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. You will be studying the conjugation of verbs, and the declensions of nouns and adjectives.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- command a wider vocabulary
- demonstrate some knowledge of the structure of Classical Greek.
- have some insight into the derivation of English words.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is for complete beginners, although you may like to join for revision purposes if you have some previous knowledge of Classical Greek but consider yourself 'rusty'.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work. Translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. Homework - about 1.5 hours per day.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Based on tutor's own material.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Classical Greek 1: module 1 in September. Please enrol as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
