What is the course about?
This course aims to extend your experience of mixed-media and composition, with traditional materials (pencils, charcoal, pastels), and the manipulation of collage, paint and paper relief. Looking at artist’s work and developing personal themes you will experiment with materials, processes and image-making, in an expressive and creative way. Some drawing experience would be an advantage.
Projects may be interpreted in either an abstract or more literal manner.
The course may appeal to anyone interested in mixed-media drawing, but also suggests common links with fine art, sculpture and textiles.
What will we cover?
- Abstract and observational drawing techniques, with line, tone, texture, colour
- Methods of mark-making
- Mixed-media techniques – drawing, painting and collage
- Looking at artist’s work and selecting subject matter
- Composition in 2D and relief.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Develop mark-making as a personal means of expression
- Explore mixed-media techniques and materials (collage/relief)
- Develop a composition or series of images.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course for students who have some drawing experience (ie have completed at least one course of 'Drawing 1' or equivalent) and those with a more specialist interest.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Handouts, presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring and group discussion.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may wish to develop your work in collage and mixed media on one of the 'Contemporary collage and mixed media' courses, 'Abstract drawing', 'Large scale sketchbook' or 'Large-scale drawing and painting' courses.
Ruth has taught drawing, painting and mixed media for more than 30 years, at many levels including Further, Higher and Adult Education, all over the country, including Manchester, Birmingham and London. She studied Fine Art at Liverpool and Birmingham Universities and has exhibited diversely, including the Royal Academy in London. As an artist and educator she has an eclectic mix of skills and interests. Drawing is pivotal. Mixed media has become a central focus over the years and her practice has developed towards the interface between Fine Art and Textiles where elements of painting, relief and experimental textiles meet. Coming from a background of accomplished artists and educators’ she has spent many years developing values in educational practice and enabling students to access their own creative potential.
