What is the course about?
Enrich and develop your comedy skills in this improvisation course. Working in a fun and supportive atmosphere, you will learn and practice key improv techniques and skills for building character. The course will cover a range of exercises designed to improve your spontaneity, creativity and communication skills. The focus is on playfulness and aspects of comedy that will enliven your work and engage others. This course is ideal for those new to improv and also serves as an excellent workout for the more experienced. Actor's wishing to improve their playfulness, presence and ability to work in the moment, will benefit from this course.

- Essential improv skills
- Developing and exploring characters and relationships
- Exploring and developing comedy situation.
Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Play Theatre sports with confidence
• Create characters and relationships with greater levels of truth
• Develop and perform confidently in a range of improvised scenarios.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
All are welcome. The key component is that you have a willingness to take risks, have fun and cooperate with others. In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice
• Give and receive constructive feedback
• Work alone, within groups and in pairs safely.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Group, pair and some individual work.
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Comfortable clothing for freedom of movement should be worn. Wear soft shoes.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Continue on to the next course improvisation course at City Lit to develop your skills further. You could consider stand-up comedy, and/or take a course in comedy writing and performance. Any general acting course will help you to develop further.
Mark Phoenix is an actor, improviser, and teacher. He teaches acting, from script to physical theatre, Meisner, Uta Hagen, Michael Checkov and improvisation techniques. He has developed his own style of performance- improvisation which he is now adapting to online work; improvising whole plays becomes improvising whole movies. Mark is also UK champion of Argentinian Tango (2016,17,18 salon category and 2019 scenario category.) His film and television work includes roles in "V for Vendetta," "The Bank Job," "East Enders," "Prime Suspect" and "The Windsors." Mark has taught at City Lit for over twenty years on both accredited and non-accredited courses.
