What is the course about?
You will learn how to use commercial photography equipment safely and start to build your confidence. The course will cover an introduction to lighting for portraits, still life and product shots. You will also learn about studio digital workflow including shooting tethered (camera connected directly to a computer) saving and backing up files off/online and creating files for web and for print.
What will we cover?
- Studio Lighting and commercial practice.
- Professional photography workflow from image capture through file delivery to image storage.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand the difference between the three forms of studio lighting.
- Setup and dismantle studio lighting including radio flash triggers.
- Take an accurate light meter reading and select the correct white balance.
- Describe a range of lighting modifiers and their purpose.
- Photograph using tethered image capture
- Correctly save images for web and print in a professional environment.
- Back up your files off and online.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is not a beginners course. There is an expectation that you are familiar with the manual controls of your camera and have basic computer skills.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught with demonstrations, handouts and hands on group practice in our dedicated photography studio. One to one support will be provided where needed.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You may wish to bring your own camera. You will be provided with all equipment, hi end cameras, tripods, lighting, light meters, tethering cables, software and Apple laptops.

Ed's photographic and award-winning retouching and image-making have received accreditations and awards by all of the above national and international governing bodies mentioned. Teaching and Learning are a massive part of Ed's Life, and he feels it's essential to pass on knowledge. His background in education started in 1998, delivering HNC photography to London Students. Joining the CityLit team was a natural progression that has allowed him to give back some of the fantastic knowledge and experience he has accumulated over his long career.
