What is the course about?

Through a series of exercises you will explore various collage techniques to guide you in generating imagery, dynamic relationships between type and image as well as creative uses in typography to develop ideas.
You will learn the importance of ‘play’ that is key to stretch your creative thinking and develop skills in visual problem solving. Encouragement will be given to take an experimental approach and to take risks in your design work. There will be the opportunity to explore and discuss the work of contemporary designers who use collage.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate an ability to present ideas using a range of collage techniques
- Demonstrate an understanding of page layout using type and imagery
- Demonstrate an ability to solve visual problems
- Have an awareness of collage in a contemporary context.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is open to everyone and all levels. From complete beginners who want to build their skills in image making and collage to those with a creative background wishing to take ideas in a new direction.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by Tutor presentations, demonstrations, practical exercises and handouts. The course is supported by Google Classroom and you will have access to additional resources, links and handouts throughout the duration of your course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials and equipment is provided. If you have particular imagery you wish to use as part of the course, please bring this with you. Please bring with you a sketchbook of your choice and selection of pens and pencils.

Pam Williams

Pam Williams is a designer and an educator with a wealth of industry experience. Working with leading architects, including Foster and Partners to create exhibition and signage design. Whilst at The Museum of London she produced graphic illustrations for inhouse Archaeology publications. She is responsible for the visual identity and promotional material for Peckham based Ganapati Restaurant. Pam has been lead as well as contributed to teaching Visual Communications at the University of the Arts on the Foundation course and for Central Saint Martin Summer School Programme. She is a graduate of Central Saint Martins and The Royal College of Art.
