Contemporary printmaking studio: focus on creative layers

What is the course about?
You will be able to develop your images from personal sources and projects and discover how printmaking can have a transformative effect on your initial sketches, designs or ideas.
You will learn to develop a range of printmaking techniques through practice and experimentation.
You will be encouraged to explore use of colour, tone and surface textures in combination for producing work. Particularly via varied monotype techniques, screen-printing and etching/ intaglio plate work.
What will we cover?
If you are new to printmaking, or would like to refresh your knowledge:
• Gentle introduction to a range of processes - including monotype printing, screen-printing and etching and related techniques (such as Chine collè)
• Learn by taking a step-by-step approach to methods, and an experimental approach to image making.
For the more experienced:
• Developing your own work/projects further with printmaking
• Exploit surface textures to expand the possibilities of print.
• Combine and layer different print related methods to achieve spectacular results.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Utilise surface textures as a way of introducing both tonal variations and vibrant marks in monochrome and colour as part of your printmaking work
• Develop imagery from personal source material
• Etch on metal using a variety of methods
• Select and prepare different papers for printing.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for all levels of ability
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures. You should be able to take short notes for your own use and occasionally make simple measurements using a ruler. Basic drwaing skills would be an advantage.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Demonstrations and personal application of different aspects of the media will be offered as you advance in
knowledge and competence.
Additional / extension tasks may be set for you to complete at home or outside of the course hours. Completion of additional tasks is encouraged to help you get the most out of the course. Where required your tutor will discuss these with you during each session.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
The course fee covers basic materials such as inks, a standard quality paper and general communal workshop materials.

Anne-Marie studied Fine Art at Epsom School of Art & Design and Advanced Printmaking at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design. She has been working with printmaking, drawing, watercolour and mixed media since 1976 and has been involved in art education since 1987 at City Lit College of Adult Education, Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design, Bath Spa University School of Art & Design, Norwich School of Art & Design, Havering college of Further & Higher Education, V & A Museum Education department (printmaking workshops,) Morley College of Adult Education. Anne-Marie has exhibited nationally including the Hayward Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Battersea Arts Centre and internationally at Brooklyn Art Library USA, RAMOMA (Museum of Modern Art Nairobi Kenya,). Publications: Mandy Bonnell & Stephen Mumberson ‘Printmaking on a Budget’; Jane Stobbard ‘Drawing Matters’; Jackie Newell & Dee Whittington ‘Monoprinting’ Teaching forms an integral part of Anne-Marie’s art practice with both often acting as a stimulus for the other.
