City Lit - Manchester Stammer

NW Stammer

Helping adults who stammer in the North West

For the first time, City Lit 7-day intensive course for adults who stammer is going to be held in Manchester.  This is thanks to a partnership between the Manchester self-help group, the University of Manchester and City Lit, and funding from the Big Lottery Fund.

What is the course about?

The 7-day intensive course gives you the opportunity to work on both developing greater ease of speech and to learn how to manage the difficult thoughts and feelings related to stammering.  You’ll meet and work with other people who stammer in a small supportive group (maximum 10).  For many people, being with others in the same boat makes a tremendous difference to their progress.  As well as working on your individual goals, you’ll learn about the following areas:

·         Exploring your own particular pattern of stammering and changes you can make

·         Ways to manage your thoughts and feelings more easily through mindfulness and cognitive behaviour therapy

·         Avoidance, the role it plays in keeping you stuck and how to move forward

·         Tried and tested techniques to reduce physical tension and to speak more easily

·         Improved overall communication skills in a range of situations, including public speaking

The course is taking place from 17 to 21 September 2018 (Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 5.30 pm) and then from 12 to 13 October 2018 (Friday and Saturday 2018, 9.30 am to 5.30 pm).  It’s important that you’re able to attend all the course.

How much?

There is no fee for attending the course, thanks to funding from the Big Lottery Fund. National Lottery Funded

Who will be facilitating the course?

The course will be led by the SpeechTherapy team from City Lit, specialist centre in adult stammering therapy.  Two of the team have experience of stammering.
