What is the course about?
In this art history course we will examine the changing nature of German Art in the 20th century and the impact of key historical events such as the First World War and the Second World War. We will focus on artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Kathe Kollwitz, Hannah Ho¨ch, Kurt Schwitters, Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter. We will discuss the political and philosophical questions raised by the artworks in relation to the historical changes. The course is structured around classroom lectures and discussions starting with German art movements such as Expressionism, Dadaism, New Objectivity and finishing with the art in the 1960s-1970s.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?
• An overview of prominent German artists and art movements from 1910s to the 1970s.
• The influence of historical events such as both world wars on artistic practices.
• The impact of new art forms such as photography, video and performance art.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Describe the works of at least six 20th century German artists and identify different German avant-garde movements.
• Evaluate how key 20th century political and social events shaped German art.
• Demonstrate improved visual analysis skills and an ability to situate the key works of art discussed in a broader cultural context.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for all levels.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught online with slide presentations and group discussions. Handouts will be provided by your tutor to support your learning on the course; these handouts will be available online/digitally for download, not printed out for you.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You might wish to purchase a notebook for taking notes. You might wish to buy some of the books on any reading list provided.
