What is the course about?

This course aims to introduce you to the fundamentals of 3D graphics, and cover the basics of the complete 3D animation workflow, from navigating the software, to modelling, texturing, lighting, animation and rendering/exporting. 3D software is often extremely expensive, Blender has developed rapidly in the last few years and now competes with the big 3D software companies for features and sophistication.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Navigating the Interface
- Creating 3D Models
- Adding Materials & textures
- Lighting models and scenes
- Rendering and Exporting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the Blender interface
- Navigate in 3D space, select and move objects
- Create a simple 3D character model and environment
- Add photographic and computer generated textures
- Light your 3D scene
- Create simple animations
- Render and export your work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners to 3D animation, some experience with creative computer software is hugely beneficial. This is a fairly technical course and therefore is not suitable for those entirely new to digital art and animation software.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught online using a range of techniques including short lectures, demonstrations, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs.
You will be taught using Zoom for the live sessions with your tutor. You will receive an email 2.5hrs before your session starts with details of the live session link. Please be aware you will need to check your email address associated with your account within this window.
We use Google Classroom E-learning platform which will store all tasks, notes, resources and demo videos. You will need to login into our Google classroom before each sessions starts.
You will need a computer or laptop. Ideally with a fully updated google Chrome browser.
You will need the latest version of the Blender software uploaded and functioning on your computer.
Using headphones with microphones will block out all room noise in sessions.
If you are using a tablet or mobile device you will need a microphone, and optionally a camera.
You will require a good broadband connection as mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle will not provide sufficient Bandwidth for live sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

For online Blender courses you will be expected to have a functioning version of the application Blender downloaded on your computer before the start of the course.
You are also recommended (but not required) to have a memory stick or external hard drive to back up your work.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

City Lit offer a range of courses in 2D and 3D Animation, Adobe Animate, Adobe After Effects, Character animation, editing, sound, illustration, cartooning, storyboarding and Adobe Photoshop to enhance your animation practice.

Benjamin Austin

Ben has been animating professionally for over 15 years and has worked on music videos, adverts, tv shows and short films that have been shown around the world. He has worked in different roles in large and small studios and independently. He specialises in character-based 3D CGI and 2D digital animation, and has a background in shooting Stop-Motion and 2D work on film. He is a practising animator and divides his time between teaching and commercial work. “Animation is a subject I have been passionate about for as long as I can remember. I still get excited about the magic of bringing something imagined to life through a drawing or 3D puppet. I enjoy the combination of the creative and technical, and all the problem-solving required throughout the process. It is hugely rewarding teaching at Citylit and helping give people the confidence to create their own animated work.”
