What is the course about?

Rhino is software used for computer-aided design (CAD); it has many applications including 3D printing and rapid prototyping. Rhino is used in multiple creative industries including architecture, product and jewellery design. It is a tool for designing and making that is relevant to any creative practitioner or an individual that wishes to learn more about 3D printing. By the end of the course, you will take home with you a small 3D printed object of your own design printed on site at City Lit.

What will we cover?

- Contextualising the use of the software in the industry.
- The 3D printing process.
- How to design work in Rhino for 3D printing.
- Drawing and manipulating curves and surfaces using various commands such as ArrayPolar, BooleanUnion, BooleanDifference, Circle and ExtrudeCrv.
- Software terminology such as CPlane, NURBS, STL and slicer.
- 3D printing terminology such as additive manufacturing, CAD, CAM, prototyping and FDM.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of 3D printing.
- Recognise how the software is used in the creative industry.
- Recognise and use Rhino to design for 3D printing.
- Manipulate curves and surfaces using various commands including ArrayPolar, BooleanUnion, BooleanDifference, Circle and ExtrudeCrv.
- Recognise and use software and 3D printing terminology.
- Recognise and use 3D printing terminology.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is best suited to those with some prior knowledge of design and/or making, however this is not essential. You should be confident with simple mathematics and accurate measurements, and have basic experience of using a computer. You do not need to have used Rhino or other CAD software’s before.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring a notebook/paper in order to make notes and a USB to save your work on. It may be beneficial to download the free trial of Rhino whilst doing the course so that you are able to practise at home.

Emilia Sutherland Netto is the designer and maker behind the jewellery brand Ember & Ore. Emilia has a BA Hons Contemporary Crafts degree from Plymouth College of Art. She has worked in the jewellery indiustry sinse 2012 in various manufacturing capacities and has taught jewellery making since 2013. More recently she has obtained two diplomas in CAD/CAM with an emphasis on jewellery manufacture.Emilia believes in using a mixture of modern and traditional manufacture and design techniques in order to achieve highly detailed and sculptural outcomes.
