Course Dates: 13/01/20 - 23/03/20
Time: 18:00 - 19:30
Location: International House
David Bauckham

Expand your skillset as an actor or someone with an interest in speech and phonetics by mastering some more ‘challenging’ accents which may include Glasgow, Belfast, Nottingham and others. An invaluable skill for all working actors.

What is the course about?

How to speak with confidence and authenticity in accents other than your own. This course will give you an effective framework, based in simple Phonetics, for studying and learning any accent for audition or performance.
Specific accents to be covered will be negototiated in class, but will include Glasgow, Belfast and other more challenging British regional accents.

What will we cover?

The accents mentioned above plus exercises to strengthen methodology, improve focus and compare with own accent and others. It may be possible to take requests for particular accents.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Break down any accent into its component parts for self-study.
Significantly increase the range of accents you are able to tackle at short notice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All that is required for you is a keen interest in the subject, a healthy dose of patience and a willingness to try out fascinating new speaking possibilities.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Theory and practise including detailed breakdown and analysis of each accent, including phonetics. Some prior
knowledge of phonetics is therefore useful but not essential. Each accent is applied to relevant text.
There will be no homework set for formal submission but you are expected to devote some time each week to practising at home with the provided recordings to reinforce the new accents you have learnt.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may find it useful to bring a small hand mirror and portable digital recording device to class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Accents: London, General American and British regional
