Acting advanced: scene work

Course Dates: 17/01/20 - 21/02/20
Time: 18:30 - 21:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Lawrence Lambert

Looking at a modern or classical play text, you will work in class to analyse, rehearse and perform your scene to an advanced level. Depending on group preference there is an opportunity to invite an audience to the final scene presentation.

What is the course about?

Work on a contemporary or classical scene to an advanced level using a range of modern rehearsal techniques. Identifying clear opportunities for character and responding creatively in the moments of rehearsal.

What will we cover?

Practical experience of acting text, using improvisation when relevant to stimulate real, thoughtful, responses to authors' lines. Breaking down a script, looking at the Previous and Given Circumnstances, Character Relationships, Space, Destinations and Motivation.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- perform with greater confidence
- Create a character.
- "Beat" a script.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some experience will help you identify with the problems of interpreting texts. Not for complete beginners.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
- Listen actively and communicate clearly.
- Give and receive constructive feedback.
- Read and analyse scripts to find meaning, clarity, identify themes and any important imagery.
- Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group and pair work when appropriate. To get the most out of these sessions, you will be expected to work outside of class to learn lines and conduct any required character preparation or work on the text.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The texts and speeches will be supplied, but you may bring a scene or speech from aplay text to the first session that you are interested in working on, for review and evaluation of its suitability for this class. Please arrive in loose suitable clothing for rehearsal work.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any improvers or advanced acting class, audition for the City Lit Theatre Company, Meisner or Stanislavski.
