What is the course about?
Fine-tune your radio acting skills by performing in a radio drama as a member of the radio repertory company. You will rehearse the play and take part in recording a polished performance that will be broadcast online. This term we will be performing scenes from Oscar Wilde's Importance Of Being Earnest. In addition, there will be a public performance of a reading of the play on Thursday 18th July. This advanced course is for those with previous experience in acting and radio, either through courses or industry. What will we cover?
Discussion of the themes of the play to be broadcast.
How to attain a range of character voices safely and effectively.
The professional rigour and etiquette of performing a radio drama.
Evaluation of the broadcast performance and how it could be improved.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You must have completed Acting for Radio: Improvers or have similar experience. Please click on Start Your Interview to apply; the Drama department will contact you to progress your application. If you are deemed to have an appropriate skillset, you are allocated to the pool of actors with the required experience. You are then invited to audition for roles in the current term's play. If you are offered a role, you then pay the fee and enrol.
You may be asked to send in an audio recording of yourself performing a short monologue (no more than 2 minutes) from a contemporary play (radio or stage).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The first three sessions will comprise acting rehearsals. In the final two sessions, you will hone your skills in acting with the mics. The Company's performance will be recorded (and edited as needed) to produce a final product that will be released online. The course will take place in the media studio. You will then be asked to make yourself available on the afternoon and evening of Thursday 18th July to re-rehearse and perform the piece (as a radio broadcast) in our theatre.

David is an actor and playwright who has specialised in radio.He has written five plays broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and acted in more than 400 others, including the pilot episode of "The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy," and comedy shows with David Jason, Roy Hudd, Kenneth Williams and the "Dad's Army" cast. On television he has played the iconic role of Davros in "Dr Who" and Simpkins, the pathologist, in "A Touch of Frost." Three of his plays have been performed in London's West End, including his adaptation of "The Wind in the Willows," which has twice broken box office records. David has been teaching radio technique for 30 years, at the Guildford School of Acting and, since 2001, at City Lit. He currently teaches Acting for radio and podcast dramas: beginners, improvers and advanced, with a new Advanced weekend workshop launching in February 2022. David's play "Walk or Die" will be repeated on Radio 4 Extra in May 2022. He has just revisited Davros with a voiceover for the reissue of "Destiny of the Daleks" and other Tom Baker episodes on Blu-ray DVD.
