What is the course about?

Working in a fun and energetic rehearsal environment, on this course you’ll take a scene from first reading to off-book performance. Guided by an experienced director, you and your fellow students will choose scenes from a selection of modern plays. You’ll then read, analyse and rehearse your scene, building towards performance through a playful and structured process. The course will culminate in a performance to an invited audience on the final afternoon. Please check your level prior to enrolling against the criteria listed below.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You need to have completed at least and one acting improvers and one beginners course. You should be able to analyse a scene (i.e. answer Stanislavski's key questions, such as identifying given circumstances and scene objectives, be able to action a text etc.) and be confident rehearsing independently.You will be required to learn lines to a set deadline. The course requires commitment including full attendance and good punctuality. If you are unsure of your suitability for the course, please check your level with the department prior to enrolling. Youneed to be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

  • The course will be taught in large and small groups, pairs and solo work
  • You will be expected to learn lines between classes

Scenes will be provided. You may wish to bring your own suggestions for scenes.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Enrol onto the next course in the series to gain greater performance experience. You could consider any improvers level course or choose to support your methodology work with a specific a course in Stanislavski.

Laura Baggaley Tutor Website

Laura is an experienced theatre director, teacher and writer and has taught at City Lit since 2011. Laura has worked at a wide range of venues including the National Theatre, the Open Air Theatre Regent’s Park, Birmingham Rep, the Cambridge Arts Theatre, and Southwark Playhouse. She loves all types of plays, from new writing and devised theatre to Shakespeare and works in translation, and enjoys bringing scenes and characters to life with students in her classes. Laura studied English Literature as an undergraduate at Oxford University and went on to take an MA in Text and Performance Studies at King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She now splits her time between teaching and writing novels for young adults.
