Develop and consolidate your acting skills by exploring a range of acting exercises and rehearsing scenes with an experienced director. You will work on exercises to improve your spontaneity, presence and ability to act truthfully in the moment. You will learn the fundamentals of script analysis, stagecraft, how to build character and rehearse a text to performance standard.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an improvers class. You need to have completed a beginners course or have suitable experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to: • Listen and respond to instructions and feedback. • Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice. • Read and respond to a variety of text. • Give and receive constructive feedback. • Take notes. • Work within groups and pairs safely.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
In pairs, groups and individually. You will be invited to learn lines outside of class.
HEALTH CHECK You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Comfortable clothing and soft shoes should be worn. Please bring a pencil and rubber for annotating scripts. You may also wish to bring a notebook and pen in these sessions.

Laura is an experienced theatre director, teacher and writer and has taught at City Lit since 2011. Laura has worked at a wide range of venues including the National Theatre, the Open Air Theatre Regent’s Park, Birmingham Rep, the Cambridge Arts Theatre, and Southwark Playhouse. She loves all types of plays, from new writing and devised theatre to Shakespeare and works in translation, and enjoys bringing scenes and characters to life with students in her classes. Laura studied English Literature as an undergraduate at Oxford University and went on to take an MA in Text and Performance Studies at King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She now splits her time between teaching and writing novels for young adults.
