This course covers a range of essential skills that all performers need to know in order to establish themselves in the industry.Taught by a theatre producer, this course covers a range of essential skills, from how to get more work through networking to managing your taxes.

What is the course about?

The reality of becoming a professional actor is demanding - you need to be able to network, market yourself, plan your career and manage your own mini-business. This can be daunting, but the basics are easy to grasp. This course is all about developing the skills you need in order to build a successful performance career. The more pro-active you can be, the greater the rewards you will see.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Finding out what your unique selling points are, and communicating them well.
Learning how to build a supportive, professional network for yourself.
Being proactive in finding work - while not being pushy!
The basics of self-employment - taxes & keeping records.
Planning for success.
Plan A’s and plan B’s - what other work can you do to fit in around your acting career?
Building resilience and motivation.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Understand and communicate your strengths as as a performer.
Know how to approach industry professionals for work in the right way.
Recognise the role and value of contemporary writers, directors and casting agents.
Stay on top of tax and your finances - know what you can claim for, have a budget, understand the process.
Have some ideas of how you can leverage other skills for synergistic work while auditioning/waiting for parts.
Present yourself professionally in person, online and on social media.
Have a career plan.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course covers basic business skills - no prior experience needed.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

No required work outside of class. However as this is a career-oriented course, you will make more progress if you start putting what you learn in class into practice. This also allows you to bring in any questions into the next class. As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Tanja Raaste

Tanja is a creative producer of theatre, dance, festivals and other live events. She set up Nordic Nomad Productions in 2005. In addition, she is an arts manager and consultant, and creates and runs workshops for performers on the business of performance and enjoyable networking. Originally from Finland, via Spain and Los Angeles, she now calls London home.
