Adobe Premier Pro and digital editing: stage 1

What is the course about?

This is an introduction to Premiere Pro and the basic principles of editing moving image footage. You will learn the essential tools of Premiere and how to work with professionally shot material to cut your own movie.
We will cover various aspects of editing, both in technical and conceptual terms. This includes inserts and overlays, A/B rolls and narrative sequencing concepts, sound management and output.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- edit clips in the source monitor
- perform an insert edit
- perform an overlay edit
- tell the difference between an insert and overlay edit and it’s function
- use the selection and pen tool
- manipulate sound up and down
- place a marker for editing
- place a transition between clips
- construct a sequence that feels smooth and professional.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introduction to Premiere Pro and the basic principles of editing moving image footage. It will be helpful , and an advantage, if you have some computer experience, but it is not necessary.
You should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, hand-outs and health and safety information and will be invited to take part in group discussion. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each week there will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of Premiere. This is then followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. Periodically there will be forum sessions were we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of editing/ filmmaking in general and the post-production process. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.
You will be taught with workshops, short lectures, practical exercises, tutorials and hand outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may want to purchase removable storage to collect and keep your data safe, though you will have your own account in class where you can accumulate your work from week to week.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with a range of hand-outs free of charge and you can make use of books in the library.
Please note that a portable hard drive/USB stick if PC formatted can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to. CDs/DVDs are available.


- You will receive an email at least 2.5hrs before your session starts with details of the live session link. Please be aware you will need to check your email address that is associated with your city lit account.
- As we use Google Classroom E-learning platform to share all tasks, notes, resources and demo videos, you will need to login into our Google classroom before each sessions starts.
- You will need a computer or laptop. Ideally with a fully updated google Chrome browser.
- You will need the latest version of Adobe Premier Pro. If you do not have the software City Lit can provide a temporary license that will last for the duration of this course. If you require more information please contact us on VisualArts@citylit.ac.uk

- It would help (but is not essential) to use headphones with microphones as it will block out all room noise in sessions.
- You will need to ensure you have a good broadband connection.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

By the end of the course you should be comfortable to do some basic editing and work with your own material. You may want to join the stage 2 editing class, or one of the other more specialized moving image classes, like a production or lighting class.
