In this continuation of editing with Premiere we look at more advanced editing tools like trimming and motion properties, and turn our attention to some of the core principles that govern narrative structure.

What is the course about?

Most editing is done from the keyboard, using tools that enable the editor to fine-tune the rough cut. We will take a look at these techniques and how to best use them. As all editing is also about story telling we will look at core narrative principles that guide most story constructions. These include POV constructions, parallel techniques and screen directionality.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

1. Trimming techniques - We will take a look at how they work.
2. Ripple and roll editing – all trimming actions are an essential tool in professional editing.
3. What are the differences between ripple and roll edits
4. Data-management is at the core of getting to grips with your material.
5. Learn to change the appearance of a clip in post production using Motion properties
6. Animate a change over time
7. Basic use the title window
8. What is Screen direction and why is it important.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1. Trim between 2 clips using the ripple trim tool
2. Trim 2 clips using the roll trim tool
3. Differentiate between ripple and roll editing
4. Name and search for clips for better identification
5. Change the scale of a clip in motion properties
6. Animate a change over time
7. Place a basic Title in a sequence
8. Distinguish different screen directions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a stage 2 intermediate course. You must have some experience in editing using Premiere Pro CC.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each week there will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of Premiere. This is then followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. Periodically there will be forum sessions were we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of editing/ filmmaking in general and the post-production process. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to have access to the latest version of Adobe® Creative Cloud for Premiere Pro CC which is what will be used to teach this course. If you do not have the software City Lit can provide a temporary license that will last for the duration of this course. If you require a license please contact us at least a week before your course starts at to arrange this. You cannot do the course if you do not have the software installed on your computer.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with hand-outs.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are further editing courses and also specialist courses in modular subjects like colour correction or sound design. Also of interest may be courses looking at the more conceptual underpinnings of film making and the creation of meaning like Film Forum.
