This practical one-day course introduces generative AI and explores how it can be used effectively in the workplace. You will learn what tools such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini can and cannot do, and how to give them clear instructions to produce useful results.
Through guided exercises, you will use AI to support common workplace activities such as researching a topic, generating ideas, drafting and revising text, summarising information and planning tasks. We will also consider accuracy, bias, privacy, copyright and the importance of checking AI-generated material.
The course is suitable for people from a wide range of backgrounds, including those returning to work, changing careers or looking to develop their existing workplace skills.
What will we cover?
What generative AI is and how it works
An introduction to commonly used workplace AI tools
Understanding the strengths and limitations of AI

What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Explain in simple terms what generative AI is and how it can support workplace tasks.
Write clear prompts that provide AI tools with an appropriate task, context and format.
Improve results by reviewing, questioning and refining AI responses.
Use AI to generate ideas, organise information and support planning.
Draft, summarise, edit and adapt workplace content using AI.
Identify potential inaccuracies, bias and other limitations in AI-generated material.
Recognise when information should not be shared with a public AI tool.
Use AI more confidently, critically and responsibly in your own work.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an introductory course. No previous experience of artificial intelligence or generative AI is required.
You should have basic confidence using a computer, navigating websites and entering text into online forms. The course is designed for learners with varied professional backgrounds and levels of technical experience.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will combine tutor demonstrations, short explanations, guided practical exercises, discussion and individual activities. You will have opportunities to experiment with AI tools and apply what you learn to realistic workplace tasks.
Activities can be adapted to suit different occupations, interests and levels of experience. There is no compulsory work outside the class, although you will be encouraged to continue practising with suitable AI tools afterwards.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional course costs. You will need access to an email address and may be asked to create or sign in to a free account for one or more AI services.
Computers and internet access will be provided. You may bring your own laptop if you prefer, together with its charger. Please do not bring or upload confidential, commercially sensitive or personally identifiable workplace information for use in class exercises.

Vina Theodorakopoulou teaches at the intersection of technology, business and society, helping learners connect big ideas on economics, innovation and human behaviour to real-world decisions and practical outcomes. With a background in financial and professional services and a PhD in behavioural economics, she brings practical insight into how decisions are made under uncertainty and how systems -from markets to organisations- affect everyday life and work. At City Lit, her courses span topics such as AI and ethics, global capitalism, innovation, sustainability and communication. Across all subjects, she focuses on connecting ideas to practice, encouraging learners to apply what they learn in meaningful and tangible ways. She has a strong interest in global cultures and communication, reflected in her teaching of languages and cultural forms, including Greek dance. She believes learning should open up new ways of thinking about work, culture and how we live — and offer practical value beyond the classroom.
