What is the course about?
This in-college literature course is an introduction to poetry and an exploration of how the poet shapes our responses.
What will we cover?
A range of poetry from the last 400 years will be discussed, although the emphasis will be on modern poetry). You will explore some of the best poems in English and discuss what makes them exceptional so that people carry on reading them.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand the use of metaphor / simile/ alliteration in poetry.
- Discuss the role of rhyme and rhythm in poetry.
- Read and discuss poetry with more confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The level of the course is introductory. No previous knowledge or experience of literature is necessary. However, you will ideally have an enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of good poems.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The session is run in a seminar style with all students invited to read poems if they wish and take part in discussions led by the tutor. You will receive the materials several days beforehand so you can read them and be ready to discuss them.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no other costs. Copies of all the poems will be sent to you several days before the session and paper copies will be provided at the session. A pen may be helpful.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
This term the tutor will also be teaching HLT125 From Nonsense to the Surreal: Edward Lear to Angela Carter and HLT302 Emily Dickinson- 'Open me Carefully' in term one; in term two Laurie is teaching HLT329 First Poets of the Modern City.
